Eyeliner is one of those products that makeup lovers just can’t go without. Eyeliner can complete a full-glam look, or stand alone on a day where you want to go for a more natural vibe. Eyeliner can be dramatic and bold, or soft and subtle; it all depends on the products you choose and how you apply them.
So, how do you choose the right eyeliner? What should you be looking for? Why is there more than one type?
We’re answering all of these questions and more, just keep reading!
If you are an eyeliner pro who enjoys the look of liquid eyeliner or gel liner, cake eyeliner will become your best friend. Cake eyeliner is the same as cake mascara, which comes in a compact and is water activated. Cake eyeliner should be applied with a fine pencil or liner brush like the one in our Mascara Brush Set.
Once you’ve applied your liner, the cake doubles as mascara which can be applied with a little bit of water and a spoolie.
Sharp Lines & Perfect Wings
Winged liner has been in style for decades, and it won’t be going away anytime soon. Mastering the perfect winged eyeliner takes some time, but once you get the hang of it you’ll find yourself wearing wings every day. To create the perfect wing, you need an eyeliner that won’t bleed or budge once it has been applied. Cake eyeliner once activated with water, flows beautifully but won’t flow down your face. Using a fine brush, you can achieve super sharp thin lines, thicker lines, or your own unique eyeliner designs.
All Day Wear
Because cake liner is designed to dry down, it won’t smudge or smear once on your eyes. Regardless of eye shape, this liner will stay on all day, so you don’t have to worry about smudging if you have hooded eyes. Once you’re ready to start the makeup removal process at the end of the day, all you’ll need is warm water or your favorite makeup remover.
Clean & Long-Lasting
Unlike liquid and gel eyeliner, there’s no chance of cake eyeliner drying out. Cake eyeliner is a dry formula that activates with water, turning instantly into a highly pigmented and creamy product. A little goes a long way, and because you can apply water, let the cake dry, and reuse the product, again and again, a single pan will last for ages.
Thanks to the dry formula, cake eyeliner is also super clean and resistant to bacteria, unlike liquid liner and gel products which immediately begin harboring bacteria after the first use.
A liner pencil isn’t a good choice if you are craving that perfect winged liner, but it is essential for adding pigment to the lash line. Because cake eyeliner is a water-activated compressed powder, it shouldn’t be used on the waterline (the lower lash line), tight-line (the upper lash line) or in the inner and outer corners of your eyes. Instead, you want a more solid product like an eyeliner pencil.
Our new Masterline eye pencils deliver soft, opaque pigment without needing to press or tug at the sensitive areas of the eye. Not everyone loves the feeling of applying liner to the waterline/tightline, but with a good eye pencil, all you need is a few quick swipes. Featuring a fine tip that can be sharpened to a precise point, these eye pencils are perfect for getting into the tight corners of your eye.
Soft & Natural Glam
If a wing isn’t your style, a simple straight line drawn on your lid at the lash line is a softer, more natural alternative. Draw the line thin to accentuate the thickness of your lashes, or apply thicker lines to create a retro, mod look. Eye pencils can also be smudged slightly with a brush, q-tip, or the tip of your finger to create a romantic, warm, and soft look.
If you aren’t super confident in your eyeliner skills, you may enjoy the extra control you’ll get with an eye pencil. Just be sure to keep the point sharpened to maximize your confidence and precision. Remember, it’s all about practice. Even the world’s best makeup artists had to start somewhere!
